Electrochemical Cells Portholes Electrochemical Sample Masks

PortHoles™ Electrochemical Sample Masks are made from 3M Model 470 Electroplater’s Tape, which is specifically designed to bond securely to metal sample surfaces. This adhesive is engineered to prevent the underflow of electrolyte under the tape edges, minimizing the risk of crevice corrosion. The hole in the tape is carefully cut to ensure a smooth edge with minimal burring, and the tape is durable enough to withstand exposure to the chemicals commonly used in electroplating.

While PortHoles are effective in minimizing crevice corrosion, there are no perfect solutions, so it is recommended to inspect the exposed edges for signs of corrosion once the experiment is finished. After the experiment, the PortHole is removed and discarded.

Key Features:

  • Durable Adhesive: Bonding strongly to metal surfaces to prevent electrolyte underflow.
  • Smooth, Precise Cut: Minimizes burring around the hole for clean, accurate testing.
  • Chemical Resistance: Formulated to withstand exposure to common electroplating chemicals.
  • They also serve to reduce crevice corrosion when samples are sealed to a cell with an O-ring, as with Gamry’s ParaCell™ and PTC1™.
  • Define a known area of the sample surface for electrochemical testing: 1, 3, or 10 cm2.

Applications:

  • Corrosion Testing: Ideal for preventing crevice corrosion in electrochemical studies.
  • Electroplating Experiments: Useful in electroplating applications to create precise, isolated testing areas.
  • Material Research: Applied in material testing and surface analysis for corrosion studies.
